Both my boys attended Nomie’s Hebrew school to prepare for their Bar Mitzvah’s.  For my older son, I went to Israel with my parents who are Israeli and they promised to be great tour guides.  Our trip was enjoyable but nothing can compare to my second visit to Israel where I included Nomie.

Chad was so well prepared for his Bar Mitzvah.  His service was flawless and she made all the arrangements from the Rabbi to the spot at the Robinson Arch to the after party.  I didn’t have to worry about a thing.  We just showed up and it was perfectly planned for us!

My trip to Israel with Nomie was magical from start to finish. Nomie is so knowledgable about every spot you visit in Israel. She is a great story teller and kept my kids interested and engaged the entire trip. She made the arrangements for all of our excursions and tailored them for my boys interests. Nomie is easy to be around and so pleasant we were all sad to see the week end. We are so grateful for having Nomie on our trip with us, I wouldn't have changed a second of the journey. I couldn't emphasize enough how strongly I recommend having Nomie along on any future trip to Israel. I am Israeli, I speak Hebrew, I know a lot of the history behind the sites however, Nomie brings articles and stories that are so engaging about everywhere you visit.  She is very connected and knows people to contact for things I would have never known about. My kids really listened to her and learned so much, she has tons of material that she shares on each place that we visited. Nomie is truly a gift, she arranged the trip of a lifetime for our family that we will never forget!

We had never belonged to a congregation and after listening to my friends who were members complain about their kids not wanting to go to religious school and how long class was each week, I knew this was not the direction I wanted to take with my daughter. Then I found Nomie. I remember calling Nomie on the phone and having an extensive conversation with her about her program. She invited Olivia to join her class for a couple sessions without any obligation to see how Olivia enjoyed her program. Olivia loved Nomie and her small class size and I knew this was the place for her. Since Olivia started classes with Nomie I have not heard any complaints about her not wanting to go to class which is only 1 hour once a week. This year Olivia has been getting ready for her upcoming Bat Mitzvah. She has been doing tutoring with Nomie this year and enjoys her one on one time with her to get ready for this milestone in her Jewish life.
Olivia has learned about Jewish holidays including the Shabbat service, learned to read from the Torah and has gained knowledge about Israel. Nomie helped her design her own tallit, the prayer shall that will be presented to her at her Bat Mitzvah. Nomie is personable, nurturing, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, motivating and her students love and adore her. Class sizes are small and for this reason Nomie learns about her students individually and each student is unique and special to her. Nomie's love, enthusiasm and dedication to Olivia's personal growth and transformation during this amazing process is both valued and appreciated. Nomie has a wonderful music teacher she works with, Wendy, who accompanies many of her classes. Wendy plays guitar and students  learn through music all of the Shabbat service prayers which is the most fun way to learn these prayers. Nomie also has her good friend, Rabbi Gil, come to class several times a year to speak to the students. He is very personable and gets to know and connect with the kids. He will be officiating Olivia's Bat Mitzvah service. At some point we will take a family trip to Israel. Nomie will be the first person I call when the time comes. She travels twice a year with families from her program and is the best tour guide, so I've heard. I look forward to visiting Israel with my family, Nomie included. Nomie is a special person and I would highly recommend her program.

My kids have been with Nomie for two and three years, respectively.  They are a year and a half apart so we chose to do a Bnai Mitzvah.  The Temple we belonged to prior to Nomie rejected the idea of a 12 year old girl getting Bat Mitzvah, so we turned to this alternative.  Nomie understands kids have a short attention span and teaches in a fun, quick manner that the children do not even know is taking place.  My daughter came in not knowing any of the Hebrew letters or how to read.  With about 6-8 private lessons, she was well on her way to catching up to her older brother.  My children were not only up to par with reading Hebrew for the Bnai Mitzvah, but they have learned so much about Jewish history, Israel, Jewish culture and the Holocaust.  Nomie offers many Jewish activities and experiences that these children may not even have had at a Temple.  We were privileged to meet Nomie’s Holocaust surviving guest speaker.  That left a lasting impact on both of my children and me.  We also participated in many activities over the years like, shofar making, Matzo factory, Sabbat celebrations and Hanukah parties and so much more.  JSN is a great option for people with less time for religious study than is required by a temple or other obstacles like ours.

Nomie Azoff and Our Trip to Israel
Every once in a great while an Angel comes into your life – this is Nomie Azoff. She came into my life when my son was 8 years old and I was looking for him to start his Jewish Education. I come from an Orthodox family; however, I married outside of my faith to a Lutheran who has been kind enough to allow me to bring my son up with Jewish traditions and values. After visiting a few Temples but then deciding that a Temple was not the right option for us we decided on JSN with Nomie. She taught my son about all the beautiful traditions in a simple, sweet, nurturing manner. She made going to Hebrew School fun and informative, and she encouraged families to come together for events such as making a Shofar with Chabad, the Matzo Factory, Shabbat with Reform, Conservative and Orthodox Temples, and Shabbat under the stars in a beautiful park setting. She has an incredible love for her religion and for kids, and her patience and kindness never waiver. By the time my son was ready for his Bar Mitzvah, I was so impressed by all the prayers he had learned and his knowledge of the religion. He knew more than I did about the holidays and about the beautiful country of Israel. Which led us to the next step – planning the Bar Mitzvah.
After meeting with countless caterers, hotels, community centers, etc., and realizing the expense that would be involved in a party that would last all of one day, we elected for an alternate option. We looked into having my son’s Bar Mitzvah in Israel so he could see in person what this country and his heritage was all about – and who better to be our guide – Nomie Azoff, his teacher, and friend. Being that she was a part-time resident of Israel and speaking the language fluently made her the perfect choice.
After meeting with Nomie a few times to discuss this endeavor and hearing from countless people that she was a fantastic tour guide, we moved forward. Nomie helped us with all aspects of the trip – from setting up a timetable that worked for us to helping us find hotels within our budget. She was always considerate about our needs, not hers. She met us at the airport when we arrived so we would feel comfortable in this foreign land. She even handed us money out of her purse as she looked into our tired, dazed eyes and took us to our hotel in Jerusalem. And so our whirlwind adventure began. I watched her in amazement as she negotiated deals for us, set up museums for us to explore, and sights to see, all the while answering our numerous questions. We explored the Old City from the top of the walls (Ramparts Walk) down to the Cobblestone floors. We ate, drank, and took in all the sights of this beautiful country with Nomie as our private guide. I watched in fascination as she spoke Hebrew, French and Arabic, engaging people with her charismatic personality. We rode camels in the desert, swam in the Sea of Galilee (while witnessing one of the most amazing sunsets I’d ever seen), floated in the Dead Sea, climbed to the top of Masada, and rode Cable Cars to the Grottos at Rosh Hanikra. We explored the Golan Heights and sampled life in a Kibbutz!! We were having such a wonderful time we didn’t want to leave. As I think back, I realize how much history we experienced and how much we learned about our Jewish culture. But that’s not all!
The Bar Mitzvah day was in itself spectacular. Nomie set us up with a Rabbi that made my son feel very comfortable and at ease. She took care of all the details so we could really enjoy the day. It was such an emotional high to hear my son reading from the Torah right there next to the Western Wall! What an experience. Looking back I know we couldn’t have done all that we did without Nomie as our guide. She knows Israel like no one else. We really got a sense of what Israel was all about. More importantly, my son came back with such pride and appreciation of his religion and culture. We felt so “at home” there and that I know we will return one day and I will call on Nomie, my Angel, for help and guidance once again when we do.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Nomie Azoff for most of my life. She first began to teach me when I was only four years old. I have never had a more effective, personable, and absolutely amazing teacher. I was one of Nomie's first Bat Mitzvah trainees prior to her founding of JSN, and the experience was fantastic from start to finish-- I will remember it for the rest of my life.
In the process, we formed a very solid bond, which speaks volumes about her interaction with her students. Having worked with her even after my Bat Mitzvah (volunteering for her program, etc.), I became much more aware of the fact that Nomie treats each and every student as an individual and strives to mentor them on a long-term and lasting basis, even after the program has run its course. She pays great attention to the subtle details that turn a good education into a fantastic one.
Her depth of caring is absolutely immense, and I can only hope that she will still be teaching by the time my children are due to begin their Jewish education!
Thank you, Nomie, for how much you have impacted my life over the past 18 years.” January 20, 2011

I have known Nomie Azoff for over 5 years. My son, Danny Avery, switched from Temple Etz Chaim to JSN in his 3rd year of Hebrew school-due to an extremely heavy school work load..... And the rest, so they say, is history!
Danny loved Nomie's class- and always came home with a smile on his face and a desire to learn more! She made learning fun! I would stand outside her door, waiting to pick Danny up, and I would hear laughter coming from her room (along with familiar Jewish tunes!) And due to her enthusiasm and wonderful knowledge of Judaism and Israel- we decided to do Danny's Bar Mitzvah in Israel with Nomie!
We did a private tour with Nomie, just my husband Howard, Danny and myself, Lori Avery. Nomie and I carefully planned, planned and re-planned the trip! My older son was selected to play in the Maccabiah games, so she helped us coordinate the trip around the games. And as you can imagine- we had to make many changes to accommodate the athletic schedule. Nomie was never thrown by any changes- and usually helped improve the plans.
The trip to Israel was one of the highlights of our lives. It was magical- and we traveled to a foreign country (even though it is our "homeland") without one problem. She really designed the trip around Danny's interests (keeping us happy also). We traveled the entire country, and did not want to leave. We saw Israel through the eyes of an Israeli, but also a friend. The Bar Mitzvah was at Robinson's Arch-at the Wailing Wall, and was absolutely perfect! The setting was breath taking, surrounded by such rich history. It was casual, spiritual, meaningful, full of love, and a day that we will never forget. Nomie suggested that we invite my older son's basketball team (that had just won the gold medal the night before) to join us at the Bar Mitzvah. She provided transportation for the entire team! And helped plan a lovely lunch for all of us. Danny's Bar Mitzvah was everything we could have wished for and more- thanks to Nomie!!!!
Nomie's enthusiasm is contagious! Every moment was a teaching moment- but in a fun way. I can't recommend her enough! And I hope someday that we will be able to travel back with her again!
